Silver Spring Presbyterian Church Vacation Bible School

I wrote some info on the page before this about how I got started helping with Vacation Bible Schools, so I won't repeat myself here, but know that I did help with both.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church always held their Vacation Bible School (VBS) during the evening, while Silver Spring Presbyterian Church always held theirs during the day. Aldersgate was almost all indoors while Silver Spring was almost all outdoors. And denominationally, the two VBS's were also different.

Responsibilities, however, were more or less the same. I helped with music and was often in charge of games, but again, I would help out where I was needed most. Sometimes they would set up a big tent where the kids could come and do crafts similar to the way it was in Jesus' time. We had an area for basket crafts, the kids could make and envgrave coins, there was a place to dress in robes, et. al. One year, I was in charge of helping the kids make mud and straw bricks. I also did a lot of role-playing for SSPC, too. One year, I was the mean tax collector that went to each city (tent) and collected their taxes every morning. My most memorable role-play occured on my last day helping. The kids had to do a scavenger hunt where they went looking for different characters of the Bible. Once they found the character, the character would tell them a story, then tell them who the next character was. I was the last character to be found, and again I played the role of Jesus. It is a humbling experience for me to be asked to take on that role. Although I "looked" the part, I would hope they just wouldn't ask any long-haired stranger to influence their children. I enjoyed myself, but most improtantly, the kids learned more about God, Jesus, the Bible, and their salvation. Although I have not helped with a VBS since then, I hope that I am able to someday help with more Vacation Bible Schools.
